OREGON ROWING UNLIMITED – ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT
All participants of Oregon Rowing Unlimited (ORU) are expected to represent themselves
and their team with honesty, integrity, and passion. Participation on the team is a privilege,
not a right, and should be treated as such. It has many benefits and brings with it a
responsibility to be positive and supportive members of the community.
In order to maintain a safe, respectful, and competitive environment, we require all
members to abide by the following:
• Respect all teammates, coaches, families, and community members.
• Bullying, harassment, and hazing by rowers and/or parents/guardians is strictly
prohibited. Bullying is defined as a repeated act that endangers the mental or
physical health or safety of an individual, with the intention to cause harm. This
includes but is not limited to any form of defamation or hate speech against
someone’s religion, race, ethnicity, and/or gender identity.
• Be mindful of how you represent the team at practice, competitions, school, and on
social media.
• Practice good sportsmanship and etiquette when interacting with teammates,
opponents, coaches, and race officials.
• Maintain a good academic standing and keep up with schoolwork during
competition season.
• Dress appropriately for practice and competitions. Athletes must wear a shirt at all
times and team-issued uniforms during competitions.
• Take care and caution when handling equipment and report any damage to coaches
immediately.
• No use of alcohol, drugs, smoking (including vape), or prohibited performance
enhancers.
• Show up on time and communicate absences ahead of time.
• Maintain a level of professionalism at regattas, such as maintaining curfew, fueling
with healthy food the night before, setting up and rigging equipment, and following
the schedule set by the Coach.
• Commit to the team’s training program by training exclusively with Oregon Rowing
Unlimited coaches and seeking prior approval from the Head Coach before
participating in any rowing-related training or coaching with another club or coach.
Unauthorized training with rival clubs or coaches undermines team cohesion and
violates the principles of honesty and integrity.
• Communicate promptly and respectfully with coaches regarding concerns, conflicts, or questions about team policies or activities.
• Respect the environment by keeping waterways, boathouses, and facilities clean,
disposing of waste properly, and following all environmental guidelines during
practices and regattas.
• Parents/guardians are expected to support the team by modeling respectful
behavior, adhering to club policies, and communicating directly with the coaches to resolve concerns.
• Adhere to USRowing’s SafeSport policies, including completing required training
and reporting any concerns about abuse or misconduct to the designated SafeSport
coordinator.
By signing this Code of Conduct, athletes and their parents/guardians (for minors)
acknowledge their responsibility to uphold these standards. Violations may result in
disciplinary action as outlined in the ORU Disciplinary Policy.
