Our team will travel to Victoria, British Columbia again to participate in the very competitive Brentwood College Regatta in Victoria, B. C., Canada on April 24-26. Brentwood International College Regatta (2537 Mt Baker Rd, Mill Bay, BC, Canada) is the largest youth regatta in North America and they’ve been hosting it for 50 years. There will be over 1,600 athletes and coaches traveling to Brentwood for this event. This is a very popular and prestigious regatta and it's only three weeks before the regionals. This regatta is a great opportunity for our rowers to compete against very strong Canadian and American teams.
ORU is taking the 8:20 am. Black Ball Ferry on Friday, April 24th from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC. On Sunday, April 26th ORU will be taking the 4:00p ferry from Victoria, BC to Port Angeles, WA.
Reservations can be made on-line here: www.cohoferry.com
If you are traveling on the ferry with a vehicle, you should make your reservations as soon as possible. Arrive one hour before departure to get your car in the line.
Our athletes will be eating several meals in the Brentwood cafeteria, Crook’s Dining Hall. Parents may pick up meal tickets once there. There will be around ten tents set up on campus offering food for sale. There are also a few restaurants, a grocery store and a coffee shop within walking distance.
The team is planning on leaving Portland on Thursday, April 23rd at 1:30-2pm. Driving with the trailer to Port Angeles, Washington takes about 5 hours. The plan is to have dinner and spend the night near the ferry. You are free to travel to Victoria on Thursday, if thats what you prefer. Otherwise, the team is expected to take the 8:20am ferry on Friday, morning. Don’t forget, you need to be up and in line an hour early. The ferry ride is about one hour and a half. We are heading straight to Brentwood college upon arrival. It will take us 45 min to an hour to get there arriving close to noon.
The kids will need to eat lunch on the ferry, because as soon as we arrive at the campus our lightweight teams and their coxswains will need to go to the Physics Labs, located in the lower hallway on the administration complex for their weigh-in. At this time the coxswains MUST have their ID bracelets on. Only one weigh-in is required during the duration of this regatta. If the crew misses the weight-in will be considered exhibition and will only row in the heat. They will not advance to finals.
The rest of the team will start rigging and preparing the boats for racing. Our first race is at 2pm - Junior A Men 4x+ and immediately after them is the Junior A Women 4x+. Because the outdock is far away from the team ground area we'll need to allow more time to carry the boats and to allow the officials to check the rower's wristbands and their boat before racing. Oars must travel with the boat. The oars are not allowed to be kept on the dock. We will most probably need the traveling parents to help with oars, shoes, etc. All boats proceed bow first to the out dock. We ONLY have 1min to get the crew off the dock. Definitely not a place for last minute adjustment.
We will be eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at the campus cafeteria. Each crew will be eating separately depending on their race schedule. The time for each meal is about 2 hours. Food ticked will be distributed upon arrival.
Friday's heats (event group A) have finals on Saturday morning, followed by heats (event group B). Finals for event group B and C are on Sunday. Only the first two boats in each heat qualifies for the finals.
The regatta ends at 1pm on Sunday. The team will load the trailer and immediately leave to catch the ferry at 4pm. It's required that we arrive 1.5 hour prior to departure to go through customs. Please call your credit card company in advance and let them know you are traveling out of the country and DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORTS!!!!!!!
