Who Rows?
It’s a FUN group, good people, and we’re all just there to have fun and get a great workout. We are all levels of fitness, experience, and age is not an issue.
When Do you go?
The Adult Learn to Row program and ORU Masters rowers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:45 to 7:15 am.  The Junior Program meets at 3:30 to 6 pm every weekday.
What is a practice like?
The Adult Program meets at the boathouse at 5:45 sharp. Sometimes we warm up on the ergometers for 15 minutes before hitting the water. Coach Kristy Aserlind (Adult Program coach) or Coach Frank Zagunis puts together boat lineups according to who’s there and what they want to row. It’s a really fun, low-key team atmosphere, and as you may know, a fantastic all-body, low-impact workout. And it’s blissful to be on the Willamette River when it’s flat and quiet and the sun is coming up. Many of us go have coffee at Grand Central in Sellwood after rowing.
What if it’s too cold? Too rainy?
In winter we work inside the boathouse by doing core strengthening and stretching on mats and rowing on ergometers (rowing machines). We start back on the water in early spring when the water is calm and safe. As for the more rainy months, weather tends to calm down around the time we get out on the water, so it rarely rains more than a heavy drizzle during practice. We do take the river’s temperament into account, however, and we won’t row if the current is too fast.
Do we all go out in the same boat?
Since we’re a development program, rowers have varying levels of experience and enthusiasm. You can be a novice or a master - competitive, or not. We have a variety of boats at our disposal - Singles, doubles, pairs, quads, 4s and 8s, and even an ocht.
What do I bring with me?
In the fall it’s DARK and sometimes chilly that early - bring a headlamp and extra warm layers.  You’ll want to wear workout clothing that’s snug-fitting, and not cotton - wool or polypro is best. Bring a hat and a warm jacket in case you are riding in the motor launch to observe. It’s also good to dress warm in case we ask you to cox (short for coxswain - pronounced ‘cocksin” - the person who steers the boat and gives instruction) as we rotate in the job of coxswain. If you have ever been one, or if you would like to train to be one, let us know!
Where do I find you?
We row on the Willamette River, out of our facility next to Oaks Park, the amusement park on the east side of the Sellwood Bridge
(Drive into the entrance of Oaks Park and turn left - keep going south until you see the long boathouses.) Click here for directions to Oaks Park
What does it cost?
The Adult Learn to Row program costs $240. per quarter. Masters rowers and Open Rowers can keep their boats in the safe and secure ORU boathouse and use the ergometers for a negotiated fee, depending on usage. (Please contact Frank Zagunis at 503-419-7222.)
For Juniors, please download the enrollment form on the ORU Junior Club page.
